A Laurita family legacy
For the latter part of the twentieth century, the Laurita name could be seen on many a construction site in the Morgantown area. Joseph Laurita began a trucking operation that expanded into the excavation business in 1959 when Jim Laurita and his brothers joined the company. In 1969 the Laurita family business expanded further with the purchase of the first of many coal mines, a business the firm continues to include in its activities.
The family business became third-generation when Jim Laurita's son Tom worked for his father as a foreman of a coal barge loading facility in Morgantown. By April of 1984, Tom had incorporated Laurita Excavating, Inc. With only a used CASE 450 track loader and hoe attachment, Tom performed residential excavation, septic system installation, and trucking. In 1989 Tom hired the company's first full-time employee Bob Graham. Bob is still with the company today, one of Laurita's many long-term employees.
Laurita Excavating, Inc. now has 80 plus permanent employees, 3 affiliate firms, and many types of projects in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.
